Crochet?

I’m doing it.  I don’t think it will ever replace knitting as my second-nature hobby, but I want this skill in my arsenal.  Maybe it’s the inspiration from Kollabora.  (Yes, I have already cut up a tons of t-shirt yarn for a crocheted basket.)

Maybe it’s the awesome crochet hook sale I happened upon.  These hooks were about 40% off when I bought them on Amazon.  I think they are still part of some kind of sale on Knit Picks, if you’re interested.  They are so cute and retro, it’s like they belong next to the Pyrex and Tupperware in the kitchen.  They have to produce something good.

Most likely, my inspiration for learning crochet is because this is happening Monday.  So, you see, I really don’t have a choice.

I don’t know why I have put off learning it for this long.   My grandmother loved to crochet at one time.  I still use her afghan when we watch tv at night.  I also have had Debbie Stoller’s Happy Hooker book for years and never made a thing from it.

I’m kind of excited.  I know how to chain and I am deft at pulling loops through loops with needles… so this should be a piece of cake, right?   Hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July!!!

  1. I've also been itching to learn – great minds!! Please pass along any tools you find useful in your journey – I've got a crochet stitch dictionary I need to delve into and see if it steers me in the right direction. Love those hooks, also.

  2. Super cute hooks – they look like they'd be really nice to work with! Crochet is really fun, I love the free-form nature of it. It is also really easy to backtrack if you make a mistake. Can't go wrong!

  3. I will, Jennifer. I learned to knit from a Debbie Stoller book, so I'm thinking her crochet book must be equally as helpful.

  4. Im excited to learn something new. I'd never thought about the ease of ripping back before but that's good to know. I found you on Kollabora, Emily, and you're so talented! I love the diagonal mesh top you made. I'm working on a mesh top right now, but with a different overall shape.

  5. Thanks! I'm wondering if it'll be as foreign to me as when I first read knitting patterns. All the BOs and SSKs blended together and hurt my brain. But that might be kind of fun. I may start with the earrings ; )

  6. Crochet is so much fun and easy to learn. And easy to correct if you make a mistake! I also prefer crochet over knitting for a long car ride or for train rides, it's easier to transport and you don't need as much space. (I knit english style, so I need my space ;))

Good luck, you can do it, I'm sure!!! You already have the cutest crochet hooks!

  7. Good for you to be branching out!!! I have only ever done knitting on a loom (the easy peasy way).

  8. Oh great, Katrina! I don't know what I'd do without other crafty people inspiring and challenging me online.

  9. Good advice. I may bring some crochet on my road trip, if I don't have too many other projects unfinished. You are definitely one of my biggest inspirations to learn crochet, Severien, with your hexagon blankets and swatch project!

  10. Hey, you should try needles sometime. I enjoyed learning with bulky yarn and large needles because everything knit up quickly. To this day, I have a soft spot for bulky knits because of that. I, on the other hand, have never used a loom.
